RARE PERFECT DIRE WOLF TOOTH WITH COMPLETE ROOT FROM THE FAMOUS LA BREA TARPITS

La Brea Tar Pits - California, U.S.A.

PLEISTOCENE PERIOD:  40,000 - 10,000 years ago

From one of the most famous (AND UNIQUE!) fossil deposits in the entire world, the famous tar seeps at the La Brea site in California is in a class all its own.  The nature of the asphalt and the magnitude of animals that were trapped and died in prehistoric times has enabled scientists to study fossils in states of preservation that normally would not be possible with other forms of fossilization.  The famous deposits are now off limits to any private collecting but this specimen we offer was from a very old private collection and was collected long ago before the site was closed and protected.  The nature of this listing affords a very rare chance to acquire not only a genuine LA BREA fossil but one from one of the most desirable large predators of the Late Pleistocene - the DIRE WOLF.  This is a lower jaw premolar of the notorious Dire Wolf, scientifically known as Canis dirus.  The entire crown and root is in perfect and complete condition.   Carnivore fossils from this site are amongst the top prizes of any fossil collection and are seldom found in private fossil cabinets.  Perfect for investment as much as it would be for a "bragging" specimen.  Absolute gem in the highest condition.  This specimen is valuable not only for its condition but even more importantly, for its GUARANTEED PROVENANCE!  NO REPAIR and NO RESTORATION.

First described in 1858 from a find in Evansville, Indiana, U.S.A., the Dire Wolf ranged across North America as the most prevalent canid during the late Pleistocene.  The Dire Wolf was the largest wolf that ever lived during this time period.  With its massive skull larger than any other wolf species known, and extremely large muscle structure in the jaws, this predator was able to catch and hold very large prey and crush bone in its jaws lined with its enlarged carnassial teeth.  It has been estimated that the Dire Wolf was as much as 20 percent larger than the largest known Alaskan wolves.
