RARE DIRE WOLF JAW WITH PERFECT CARNASSIAL TOOTH - Suwannee River - Florida, U.S.A.

PLEISTOCENE PERIOD:  1.81 million years - 10,000 years ago

From a Pleistocene deposit of the Suwannee River in Florida, U.S.A., this is a stunning and very rare jaw of the notorious Dire Wolf, scientifically known as Canis dirus.  The entire bone is very dense and exhibits a highly unusual "river polish" from exposure for tens of thousands of years to the current.  The shiny surface is NATURAL and was not painted or polished artificially.  This feature is unique to this one site on the river and all fossils from the period that are exposed from this site are found with this naturally-occurring feature.  This specimen was found from the same site as  LM3-005.  There is one carnassial (flesh-shearing) tooth attached and it is PERFECT!  Tooth is unworn and fossilization has left a gorgeous colorful hue to the perfect cusps and enamel.  Bone is a rich chocolate brown with growth lines in the bone accentuated from the river wear.  INTACT and 'as found' with fantastic preservation.  Quality fossils from this famous and deadly Ice Age North American carnivore are HIGHLY PRIZED and RARE!  Guaranteed NO PAINT, NO REPAIR and NO RESTORATION.

The DIRE WOLF is one of the most popular and certainly, was one of the most dangerous predators of the last Ice Age in North America.  First described in 1858 from a find in Evansville, Indiana, U.S.A., the Dire Wolf ranged across North America as the most prevalent canid during the late Pleistocene.  The Dire Wolf was the largest wolf that ever lived during this time period.  With its massive skull larger than any other wolf species known, and extremely large muscle structure in the jaws, this predator was able to catch and hold very large prey and crush bone in its jaws lined with its enlarged carnassial teeth.  It has been estimated that the Dire Wolf was as much as 20 percent larger than the largest known Alaskan wolves.

HIGHLY RARE SPECIMEN WITH PERFECT CARNASSIAL TOOTH- HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
