PLATECARPUS
MOSASAUR TOOTH
Khouribga, Morocco
CRETACEOUS
PERIOD: 65 million years ago
These
beautiful fossil tooth specimens are from a mid-sized type of
mosasaur
called Platecarpus ptychodon. These
fascinating monsters of the prehistoric seas grew to lengths of 25 feet
and are a mid-sized identified species from the Oulad Abdoun Basin of
Morocco and one of five species known in the Maastrichtian phosphates of
the Ganntour Basin (Morocco). Platecarpus was a slender-bodied
mosasaur. The tail of platecarpus was as long as its body.
Compared to the teeth of Mosasaurus, the largest variety, Platecarpus
ptychodon had narrower, sharply pointed teeth
lacking massive thickness at the base. This suggests that Platecarpus fed on soft-bodied creatures
such as fish and soft-shelled cephalopods. Each
tooth will possess gorgeous enamel and
coloring. They were found in the phosphate mines in Khouribga,
Morocco - North Africa and are hand selected for their fine quality. Some may
exhibit natural wear from the creature on the tip and/or on a leading
edge. Platecarpus
teeth are a highly collectible fossil specimen and definitely recommended for any collection
especially to fully supplement a tooth collection of all types of one of
the most interesting prehistoric beasts that ever lived, MOSASAURS!
