EUTRICHIURIDES JAWS WITH TEETH IN
MATRIX -
Khouribga, Morocco
LATE
CRETACEOUS PERIOD: 96 - 66 million years ago The seas of the late cretaceous must
have been a terrifying place. Imagine ferocious ribbon-like fish with jaws
of fangs and needle sharp teeth such as the set pictured here. This
rare set of Eutrichiurides jaws with intact teeth were found in the phosphate mines
of Khouribga,
Morocco. The front fang is also intact and prominent in the above
photos. It is very, very uncommon to find BOTH the upper AND lower
jaws of this fish together, fully articulated as in this specimen. The Eutrichiurides was from the snake mackeral family and was a
long and slender, sword-shaped fish that struck it's
prey with deadly, lightning quick attacks. Seldom is heard
about this killer outside of paleontological studies.
