ULTRA RARE MASSIVE NEAR 5 FOOT LONG TOROSAURUS DINOSAUR ARTICULATED COMPLETE SCAPULA AND CORACOID BONE

Hell Creek Formation, South Dakota, U.S.A.

LATE CRETACEOUS PERIOD:  72 - 65 million years ago

Collected from the famous Hell Creek Formation of Northwestern U.S.A., this is an EXTREMELY RARE articulated scapula and coracoid from a Torosaurus latus horned dinosaur.  Very few positively identified post-cranial bones exist in museum collections from this unique horned dinosaur compared to the prevalence of similar fossils from its cousin, Triceratops.  A specimen such as this is not only truly incredible to see in person but it is equally impressive in its rarity and completeness as well as the association of two bones found together as they would have been in the skeleton.  These bones were part of a partial skeleton with skull.  This specimen is still positioned as found in its original field jacket which has been finished and reinforced to best and safely display these magnificent genuine dinosaur bones of enormous proportions.  This bone would have articulated with the distal end of the humerus and been the anchor point for the upper arm on this giant prehistoric beast.  It is in remarkable preservation and in a state of completeness that is seldom seen.  The coracoid has NO RESTORATION and the scapula has ONLY 2% restoration!  This is extremely rare in a horned ceratopian scapula since this is a very thin and fragile bone by design.  Large complete dinosaur bones are very uncommon in this state of quality and such specimens are the perfect public displays of just large these massive beasts grew to.  Isolated, post-cranial bones of horned dinosaurs are virtually impossible to attribute to a specific species (despite the many specific listings of fossil dealers) but this scapula was found with a complete, partly crushed 8+ foot skull of a Torosaurus hence our ability to make a rare positive ID of this beautiful specimen.  Bone detail is amazing and the small portion that was missing was filled (less than 2% of bone) with the remainder of the bone surviving in very rare form.

This bone is naturally, of a very thin and fragile design.  Most dinosaur bone fossils are very fragile and difficult to transport and display without them becoming damaged.  This bone has a reinforced jacket inconspicuously surrounding the back portion.  This is required to be able to safely pick up, transport and display the bone without it shattering.  The entire perimeter of the bone is real and has been further protected by a border of sand that we added in the jacket and hardened for extra strength and protection.  The bone can be safely picked up and stood on its end as shown above.  This is one of the largest complete dinosaur bones we have ever collected or sold is the only of its kind we have ever seen from this species of horned dinosaurs.  Post-cranial fossils of Torosaurus are EXTREMELY RARE EVEN AMONGST SCIENTIFIC COLLECTIONS IN THE FINEST MUSEUMS!  Perfect for a feature showpiece specimen in any public display!

Horned ceratopians were extravagantly well-armored in their head region.  Their skulls were heavy and armed with long, pointed horns.  Extending off to the rear was a great sheet of heavy bone called the "frill".  On some horned ceratopians, this was a solid sheet and likely served as a shield to protect the neck and even shoulders.  On other types, the frill was an open framework of bone that was covered with skin, possibly acting as a heat shield or for social display.  The edge of the frill on most horned ceratopians was armored with blunt, triangular spikes called epoccipitals.  The Torosaurus latus is known to have one of the largest skulls known of any animal that ever lived on land.  Torosaurus skulls have been known to reach 8.5 feet in length!

All horned ceratopians were herbivores.  Triceratops is the most famous of the great horned dinosaurs.  This plant-eating group has been found in the fossil record in greater abundance than all the other varieties.  A full grown Triceratops is estimated to have weighed 11 tons, heavier than a modern African bull elephant.  Its skull was 6.5 feet long with a pair of brow horns that exceeded 3 feet in length.
