RARE
SUPERB AND COMPLETE HADROSAUR DINOSAUR HUMERUS (UPPER ARM) BONE
Hell
Creek Formation - South Dakota, U.S.A.
LATE
CRETACEOUS PERIOD: 72 - 65 million years ago
Collected
from the famous Hell Creek Formation of Northwestern U.S.A., this is a
superbly preserved and
complete
humerus (upper arm bone) from an Edmontosaurus annectens, the
predominant hadrosaur species that can be found in the Hell Creek
Formation of Northwestern U.S.A.. It is an extremely well-preserved and very attractive
specimen. The bone was found in pieces but was all there.
Only cracks were filled in
the course of the repair and a very small corner of the proximal end was
reconstructed due to
the bone pieces being to fragile to save. This bone was an
underground find and the quality of the preservation is the result -
right down to the fine surface detail of the bone where muscle ligaments
attached. Distal end joint is solid and well preserved with full
articulating surface. Often, dinosaur limb bones are found
incomplete and in many cases, unrelated parts are assembled together
from multiple dinosaurs to make a complete bone in the effort to
increase its marketability. This is a true museum grade specimen
and is solely from one dinosaur. Dinosaur bones of this magnitude
and type are very rare in this condition. Often, they require
extensive putty filling and fabrication but this bone was the exception.
Specimen is heavy and fully mineralized. It has been stabilized
and is safe to handle. Most dinosaur limb bones in private
collections are pieces or poorly preserved examples. Large limb
bones like this are a prize discovery and truly impressive for viewers
from pro to beginner!
For
its astonishing array of dangerous and large prehistoric predator
fossils, no place has captured more attention or has been featured on
television more than Hell Creek! This area is known to many as
"the Valley of the T. rex!". The "duck-billed"
Hadrosaurs and the "horned" dinosaurs like Triceratops were
common prey for many large meat-eating dinosaurs of the famed region. Hadrosaurs were
herbivores (plant-eaters) and only had teeth in the cheek area, not the
front of the mouth. The many rows of teeth were perfect for
effectively grinding up rough vegetation for easy digestion.
This
unique group of dinosaurs grew in sizes over 40 feet and probably
weighed over 5 tons! In-depth studies of a variety of duckbill
remains indicate that these were strictly land-based dinosaurs that
walked predominantly on all fours but had the ability to stand on their
hind legs.
Hadrosaur
remains have been found in China, North America, South America
(Argentina) and Europe.
