LARGE INTACT CRETACEOUS PTERODACTYL PTEROSAUR COMPLETE UNBROKEN CLAW
Tegana
Formation - Kem Kem, Morocco
MIDDLE CRETACEOUS PERIOD:
96 million years ago
Pterosaur
fossils were only recently attributed to a species in 1999 from the Mid-Cretaceous
deposits of the southern border of Morocco. To date, the only
pterosaur species named from Morocco is
Siroccopteryx
moroccoensis.
With an estimated wingspan of nearly 20 feet, this anhanguerid
pterodactyl ranks
amongst the largest pterosaurs known. There have been comparisons
of this creature to other anhanguerid species known from the Early
Cretaceous of Brazil. Only jaw fragments and teeth have been
discovered from Morocco and much has yet to be learned about this
fascinating and giant flying reptile from prehistory.
This is the first time we
have been so fortunate to be able to offer the finest and largest
pterodactyl claw we have seen from ANY world deposit. It is
unusually large PTERODACTYL CLAW from a
Siroccopteryx
moroccoensis. It is in
THE FINEST POSSIBLE state of preservation and completeness, PERIOD.
For the ultimate addition to augment a dinosaur and prehistoric reptile
claw collection, this is one of the rarest claws to find. When one
occasionally comes along, it is very small (they are small by nature,
anyway) or it is only partially complete, repaired or poorly preserved.
This INVESTMENT GRADE pterosaur claw owes its stunning preservation and
complete nature to the fact that it was encased in a sand concretion
which protected it for the past near 100 million years. We
prepared the specimen fully in our lab and to be conservative about the
procedure, we opted to stop with some of the sand matrix still attached
to the base to avoid damaging or breaking this ultra rarity. The
surface of the claw is in spectacular condition - The best we have
ever encountered. Fossils from this formation that are
covered in this calcified sand require extensive and very careful
preparation but if done properly, an incredibly well-preserved specimen
can be extracted. To protect the extremely rare unbroken nature of
this claw, the specimen has been stabilized so it can be safely handled.
You will not see a finer
example and this
is the only claw we have to offer - it has been the only one we have
come across that we feel worthy to offer to our clients, ever!
This rare claw is
100% COMPLETE WITH NO
REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION OR FABRICATION.
FOSSILS AS
INVESTMENTS: Certain
fossils like this of broad
public interest have
such a strong international demand and there are so few honestly
represented specimens of fine quality that ever reach
the market today. Common sense tells you that such a fossil is
not only a good investment NOW, but it will always prove to be a prize of
ever-increasing value as the general public becomes more and more aware
of collecting items of natural history as the increasing popularity of
large auctions sales have proven on an international scale.
Unlike
minerals, meteorites and precious metals, fossils are the ONLY type of
item that is NOT renewing itself in the earth or falling from the sky to
earth on a continual basis. Fossil deposits are extremely finite
and many have been fully depleted or are near depletion from decades of
buyer demand. Other contributing factors such as legislation
banning their collecting or export along with destruction of deposits due construction
projects or adoption of destructive, large-scale modern equipment in
dredge / quarry operations
all translates to fossil deposits being rapidly exhausted and/or
destroyed forever.
Fossils are becoming rarer than the
collector market now
realizes. Most likely, by the time the broader populace "discovers" the
enjoyment and investment potential of rare, fine quality fossil
specimens, the "party will be over" and new material will be long gone with specimens transferring from private collection to
private collection, at sky-rocketing prices each time a specimen changes hands. Emphasis on RARE and FINE QUALITY fossils only.
The increasing prevalence of
fakes and heavily altered or enhanced specimens being passed off to
unsuspecting buyers by unscrupulous or ignorant dealers underscores the
rarity of good material now!

The
Pterosaur was a flying reptile (commonly referred to as Pterodactyl
"wing finger") of the order Pterosauria. They existed from
the late Triassic to the Cretaceous Periods (228 - 65 million years ago)
with the earlier Triassic species having long, fully toothed jaws and long
tails. The later forms had a stump for a tail, no teeth and a jaw
more like a beak than the elongated jaw of the earlier species.
At
least 60 genera of pterosaurs have been found with sizes ranging from a
sparrow to monsters with wingspans in excess of 40 feet! The wings
were thin membranes of skin, similar to the wings of bats, and extended
along the sides of the body.
They
were attached to the extraordinarily long fourth finger of each arm.
The bones were hollow and had openings at each end. Unlike typical reptiles,
pterosaurs had a breastbone that was developed for the attachment of
flight muscles and a brain that was more developed than comparable
dinosaurs of similar sizes.
There
is no fossil evidence of feathers. Most researchers now believe that
pterosaurs were adapted for active flight, not just gliding as was earlier
believed.
