ULTRA-RARE
CHOICE GRADE NEAR 5 INCH SPINOSAURUS DINOSAUR TOOTH
Tegana Formation - Kem Kem, Morocco
LATE
CRETACEOUS PERIOD: 96 - 66 million years ago
This
mammoth-sized dinosaur tooth would have been 6 inches long had the tip
not been worn from what must have been endless killing and eating.
With such a large creature, it is
nearly impossible to find teeth in this size range that are not worn
considering the amount of food a large dinosaur would have had to
consume
to sustain such massive body mass. This is one of the largest and
nicest Spinosaurus teeth we
have ever had in our inventory. It came from a HUGE Spinosaurus
dinosaur.
The
robust root is very complete and gives indication
as to the necessary strength and anchor such a tooth needs from such a
ferocious animal with extreme bite force. This exceptionally large Spinosaurus tooth is a
VERY rare example. It can boast of
NO FABRICATION OR
RESTORATION OF ANY KIND,
unheard of in such a gargantuan tooth - only a fracture, sustained
when this tooth was dug, has been repaired. If only this tooth
could talk it would tell of the carnage that it saw and partook in.
The tip is smoothly worn with no breakage. This wear all occurred
during the life of this monster, when this tooth was still being used. Enamel is dramatically
ridged as is typical on very large teeth of older Spinosaurids.
Enamel is spectacular and intact with a naturally lustrous glow.
Again, tip is intact, not
broken off from mishandling. It exhibits ONLY natural wear from
the dinosaur's constant use in feeding.
Teeth in this size are
rarely available on the market. Any specimen that even approaches
5 inches always carries a hefty price tag. We strongly recommend this
amazing example to any collector because prizes like these are no longer
being found like they once were and steady appreciation of prices in the market are already
reflecting that.
WARNING:
A common trick to fake
large dinosaur teeth in the market is to attach either a bunch of sand
mixed with glue on the end of the tooth's root to exaggerate the length
or even worse, fabricate a giant impressive tooth by combining and
blending multiple teeth sections together to appear as one massive
tooth. The workmanship of one notorious United States-based faker
is of the finest workmanship and VERY convincing in appearance.
Don't be fooled when you are shopping for large dinosaur teeth of ANY
SPECIES, not just Spinosaurus. These are common practices of both
unscrupulous and uninformed dealers. We see these "doctored" large
dinosaur teeth offered quite frequently and numerous junk, worthless
teeth that have been converted and heavily modified are selling for
ridiculously high prices, mostly at shows and on the internet.
Ebay is one of the worst places for this where fraud runs rampant and
unchecked in the entire rare collectibles field!
The
remains of Spinosaurus aegyptiacus were first
discovered by a German collector in 1912 in central Egypt. A variety
of pieces were recovered including a skull and teeth. On the evening
of April 24, 1944, a British bombing run on Munich destroyed these and
many other rare fossil specimens.
Spinosaurus is one of the
longest and strangest of all carnivorous dinosaurs. At 50 feet long
and 4 tons in weight, it was truly a monster! Its most unusual
feature was a row of broad club-shaped spines 6 feet tall, projecting
upward from the backbone. It's believed that these spines were
covered with a sail of skin which could be raised by the creature as a
social display or as a way to regulate body temperature.
To this day, no other
dinosaur has been found with such tall and broad-shaped neural spines.
Fossil remains of Spinosaurus aegyptiacus are only found in the
North African Sahara Desert. Contrary to the inhospitable desert
environment where Spinosaurus fossils are found today, this region was a
vast swampy tropical paradise abundant with life during the Cretaceous
Period when Spinosaurus was alive and inhabiting its muddy river shores
and bogs.
