RARE PERMIAN PLANT FOSSIL ON SLAB Odernheim / Rhineland - Pfalz, Germany EARLY PERMIAN PERIOD: 290 million years ago SPECIAL NOTE: The current laws in this region of Germany now forbid the collection of these fossils. Legislation has permanently ended the supply of such magnificent specimens such as this one being offered here. This fine example comes from an old German private collection and was collected long ago before the ban was enacted. With digging in the formation now off-limits, these German Permian fossils are sure to appreciate in value and become increasingly difficult to acquire. This is a uncommonly large and finest possible example of a Permian plant called Hermitia germanica. The intricate detail of the delicate nature of the leaves is fully present and wonderfully preserved on the original shale matrix in which it was found. On each side of this slab is a fossil of Hermitia germanica but the side shown is the one with the largest and most impressive of the entire small lot we purchased from this collection! Hermitia germanica was a prehistoric plant that thrived during the Permian Period, before the first dinosaurs walked the earth. The roots of these plants were not particularly strong and during storms, large numbers were up-rooted and deposited in low lying regions, rapidly buried under sediments. These buried beds of decomposing plants existed in a unique environment without oxygen during the breakdown process. The result was the formation of coal which is found today in the region. These fossils were formed in a different manner from the coal deposits. The fossils were found in what once was a swampy aquatic environment and their burial was less dramatic than mass burials that formed coal beds. Alongside these graceful plants, fish such as Paramblypterus and amphibians such as Sclerocephalus swam below the quiet, calm Permian waters nearby. Siligaria lived and went extinct before the very first dinosaurs!
