PATHOLOGICAL
DOUBLE-TIPPED LARGE MEGALODON
TOOTH -
Morgan River, South Carolina, U.S.A.
PLIOCENE PERIOD:
5.3 - 1.81 million years ago
Usually,
when a diver or dealer acquires such a rare Megalodon tooth as this
forked pathologically deformed example, it is not offered for
sale. Unlike other dealers, we do NOT collect teeth and high-grade
all the best acquisitions, keeping them for ourselves. This
explains the consistently better quality and larger quantity of very
high quality and rare specimens. Pathologically deformed teeth
have a strong collector following. Of the deformities that are
sought, a tooth with a forked or multiple tips emerging is considered THE
crown jewel of any collection. Most deformities in teeth are just
a slight twist of the crown or a wrinkle in the blade. While we have available for sale
Megalodon teeth that show a variety of these deformities, this is only
the second time we have offered a quality tooth with multiple tips and
this is the first of forked tooth we have listed for sale. This HIGHLY
COLLECTIBLE and RARE
specimen has absolutely NO
REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION.
This
superb and dramatic specimen appears as if the tooth wanted to grow much
larger and split into two. The crown is VERY squat and robust and
the root is much more massive than a single tooth should be. Most
bizarre is the giant nourishment hole in the root. This is
believed to have housed the main blood vessels feeding the growth of the
tooth. The giant overgrown opening is over five times what a
normal opening would be so it looks as though the jaw was intending to
feed more than one tooth in this opening. The growth process was
stopped for some reason as this tooth formed. It appears the tip
was beginning to separate and the body just below it depresses as if it
too, were making way for a deeper division of this tooth into two.
This is hard to see in the photos but very obvious when the tooth is
viewed in hand.
This tooth is
intact with well-preserved gray green metallic enamel of strong
chatoyance. The root is complete and incredibly dramatic.
Along with the forked tip, the entire profile of this tooth looks like
it is compressed from the top and wanting to explode into two separate
teeth! Serrations are exceptional and were likely protected from
wear due to the fact this tooth could not easily pierce the victim's
bodies. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and a very rare and desirable
example! Every Megalodon tooth collection should contain at least
one deformed tooth. A multi-tipped variety is the least common and
most desired!
At a length of 52 feet
and weighing in excess of 60 tons, Carcharocles megalodon was the second
largest predator that ever existed on this planet, the largest being the
sperm whale. Megalodon was larger and heavier than T. rex.
Scientific reconstructions of this shark estimate the dorsal fin 5.5
feet tall, the pectoral fins at 10 feet in length and the tail over 12
feet high. If you were unfortunate enough to have a megalodon swim
over you, the pectoral fins would measure 30 feet from tip to tip with a
torso in excess of 10 feet thick! The jaws were so large that
this shark would be able to swallow a Rhinoceros whole. A
predator this size would have most likely fed on large marine
vertebrates, especially whales. Fossil teeth have been found in
excess of 7 inches in length! Megalodon teeth are similar in
geometry to the modern White Shark and scientists are still passionately
divided on the origin of the two species and if megalodon is related to
the modern white shark. It is also not fully understood why this
giant killer became extinct but we can all be glad it is. A day at
the beach just wouldn't be what it is today!
