LANNACUS TRILOBITE
Anti-
Atlas Region, Morocco
ORDOVICIAN
PERIOD: 510 million years ago
Amongst
the largest trilobites, the Lannacus sp. asaphid trilobite is a
large trilobite from the Anti-Atlas Ordovician deposits in southern
Morocco usually found in concretions looking like fat pancakes.
The rock is split open and if you're lucky, a nice trilobite is encased
in the rock as this one is. This impressive specimen is fully articulated and inflated exhibiting
wonderful detail and preservation. Surrounding matrix has been
fully prepared for better display appeal. The majority of the
original limonite orange coloring is present. A thin layer of resin
was applied over the genuine
cephalon and free cheeks to reinforce and repair the region as this part partially stuck
to the other side of the rock when split open and became
fragmented. Thick host
rock is 100% original with no filler and fully present with only repairs
sustained during excavation.
Here's
a seldom seen trilobite that makes a fantastic display fossil for it's
rarity, natural condition and impressive size on its thick and original
rock matrix. The round shape of the rock and the geode nature of
how these came to be fossilized are interesting and unique fossils for
any display. This trilobite type is surely to appreciate as the
very limited supply continues to dwindle.
